Destiny Electronics Private Limited deliberately neglected to pay retrenchment package it owed to Danny Zuze, a move which has prompted him to approach the National Union of Metal and Allied Industries in Zimbabwe (NUMAIZ) for redress.
According to Henry Tarumbira, the NUMAIZ General Secretary, Destiny Electronics had mutually agreed to terminate contracts of employment of 5 employees including Zuze by way of retrenchment agreeing to pay them retrenchment packages.
“We write to register our displeasure with your company Destiny Electronics (Pvt) Ltd for its failure to pay Zuze’s retrenchment package according to the retrenchment agreement,” reads part of NUMAIZ’s letter to Destiny Electronics.
“It is pertinent to note that parties had mutually agreed on the 30th of September 2024 that for the period covering October 1 to December 31 2024, Destiny will pay US$3097.02 and you only paid US$250 meaning that Destiny Electronics owes Mr. Zuze US$2847.02 for the stated period. In that regard we request that Destiny Electronics honor the agreement by paying the unpaid retrenchment package for October, November and December adding to US$2847.02 together with US$1032,34 a January 2025 installment on or before 31 January 2025 failure of which we approach the relevant court without any further notice,” reads NUMAIZ’s letter.
The Director of Destiny Electronics, David Easterbrook said the company had been under judicial management for the past 10 years and it has also been on a week on and week off program with employees for 12 months and this measure has not turned around the business.
“We will pay all our former employees as agreed, it is only that funds were scarce and we apologies for the inconvenience caused,” he said.
But Tarumbira remained adamant and promised to pursue the matter with the relevant court. “We abide by our letter to Destiny,” he said.
