Legislator takes parly to task over peanuts salaries

HARARE – Mbizo Constituency Member of Parliament, Hon. Corban Madzivanyika, recently criticized the government over the worsening conditions of civil servants, describing their low earnings as “unsustainable” during a parliamentary session on Wednesday.

Speaking during the Question and Answer Session, the opposition MP highlighted the struggles faced by public sector workers, noting that many earn less than USD 300 per month, far below the poverty datum line.

“Civil servants are suffering, earning less than USD 300 per month! Government must take action to align salaries with the cost of living, which is pegged at a poverty datum line of $500, or reduce P.A.Y.E (tax on employees),” Madzivanyika told Parliament.

He called on the government to urgently review civil servant remuneration to reflect the realities of rising living costs, arguing that current salaries are insufficient to meet basic needs.

The MP’s remarks come amid growing concerns over public sector morale, with many civil servants reportedly struggling to cover essential expenses such as rent, food, and transport.

Madzivanyika urged the administration to consider both salary adjustments and tax relief measures to ease the burden on workers, stressing that failure to act could have broader social and economic consequences.

“Public servants are the backbone of our government services. If their welfare continues to be ignored, it will impact service delivery and the overall wellbeing of our communities,” he added.

The call by Hon. Madzivanyika reflects a wider debate on the sustainability of public sector wages in Zimbabwe, particularly as inflation and living costs continue to rise.
