Young workers feel the brunt of Zim’s bad labour practices

YOUNG Workers chairperson, Marvelous Tawomhera has bemoaned the fact that the country’s ever depreciating labour environment continues to exacerbate untold hardships on young workers in the country.

Speaking to The Worker   on the sidelines of a two-day Young Workers Policy Review meeting recently, Tawomhera said a number of factors continue to affect the country’s young workers.

“We are concerned about the struggles which are being faced by young workers in accessing employment especially where some experience is required. Currently, many youths are failing to access industrial attachments but when employers flight job adverts they normally demand working experience,” she said.

She said the other issue affecting young workers is about decent work in Zimbabwe where bigger companies continue to exploit workers.

“You find that the issue of contracts on fixed term is increasing and this is a way of casualising labour and it is also a way of exploiting workers.

“The worst affected groups are young workers by virtue of this country having more young people hence many people who are working are young people who are normally at the verge of such exploitation,” she said.

The young workers’ chairperson said there is a lot that needs to be done so far at the TNF in order to mitigate those areas so that young workers are given the same opportunities as those who are older considering that for one to attain experience there is need for the room to do the work first.

“We also have problems of sexual harassment, gender based violence and even violence in general at the workplace and this normally affects the young people so that’s why we are even advocating for the ratification of Convention190 which is the only treaty that can protect employees,” she said.
