All set for ZCTU Extraordinary Conference to fill Secretary General’s post

By Staff Reporter

All is set for the ZCTU Extraordinary Conference, set for August 30, to fill in the vacant post of Secretary General following Japhet Moyo’s retirement in September 2024.

Moyo had served as Secretary General from September 2011 until his retirement last year and the process to replace him was set rolling by the ZCTU General Council, the highest decision making body in-between congresses, when it resolved to go the ‘elective congress’ route to fill the vacant post.

In a notice to affiliate unions notifying them of the impending event, Acting Secretary General Runesu Dzimiri advised unions to prepare and be in compliance with set rules and standards for them to be eligible to participate.

“Pursuant to a special General Council meeting held on the 3rd of March 2025, a resolution was made to convene an Extraordinary Conference on the 31st of August 2025 to fill in the vacant post of Secretary General. Following the resolution, we have the pleasure to inform you that the Extraordinary Conference will be held on the 30th of August 2025 at a venue to be announced once confirmed,” reads part of the notice.

The conference will be held in terms of section 14 of the ZCTU constitution.

“However, kindly be advised that according to clause 14.2 “all the rules of representation and proceedings shall be the same as those of the General Conference...” and therefore you are urgently requested to furnish us with your total membership. Once you declare your membership we will notify you of the number of delegates you are entitled to.”

“Clause 9.2. of the ZCTU Constitution stipulates that the conference “shall be composed of delegates from fully paid affiliates and the elected officials of the congress and members of the National Women’s Advisory Council (now Women’s Committee) and National Young Workers Committee who shall have the right to vote,”  reads the notice.
