Zimbabwe’s Lithium Boom Leaves Local Workers Behind as Chinese Control Surges

By Own Correspondent

While Zimbabwe’s lithium reserves have drawn significant international investment, a new chapter is unfolding—one marked by both opportunity and hardship for local communities.

With Chinese-backed companies now responsible for more than 80% of the country’s lithium production, the industry’s landscape has shifted dramatically.

Industry leaders, such as Innocent Rukweza of the Lithium Producers Association of Zimbabwe, note that Chinese involvement reaches beyond mining to encompass processing and exports. While this has brought capital and advanced technology to the sector, it has also raised questions about local empowerment and the distribution of economic benefits.

The recent global slump in lithium prices has revealed underlying vulnerabilities. Many local workers have faced layoffs as companies scale back and delay projects. Some communities that once hoped for prosperity from the lithium boom are now dealing with economic uncertainty and job losses.

As Zimbabwe seeks to recover from the downturn, there is growing debate about how foreign control of strategic minerals affects national interests, local employment, and long-term development.

The challenge moving forward will be to ensure that the benefits of lithium mining reach not just foreign investors, but also the Zimbabwean workers and communities at the industry’s heart.
